Ryerson University's Department of Architectural Science's 2015-2016 lecture series continues next week, with a lecture titled Vertical Village by acclaimed architect Natalie de Vries, co-founder of Dutch architecture firm MVRDV, on Thursday, January 21. The lecture will cover topics addressing the changing norms of architecture, including the “vertical village” concept, which evolved in response to the condition faced by many rapidly-urbanizing Asian cities where large-scale high-density development lacking identity and infrastructure is threatening the delicate urban fabric. With Toronto developing at a rate faster than any other city in North America, there is much to learn from looking outward at design and sustainability standards in other regions.
The event will be held on Thursday, January 21, 2016 from 5:30 – 8:00pm in LIB072, on Gould at Victoria, starting with Natalie de Vries' lecture at 5:30. Afterwards there will be a panel discussion moderated by Elsa Lam, Editor of Canadian Architect, and will include panelists Gary Switzer of Mod Developments Inc., Chris Glasiek of Waterfront Toronto, Peter Clewes of architectsAlliance, and our own Craig White, Managing Editor of UrbanToronto.
